Tamiko Design Quilts

Custom textile art for the places, people, and stories that shape us.

A quilt holds more than warmth. It can hold a journey, a memory, a family, a place once called home.

Tamiko Design Quilts creates one-of-a-kind, memory-based quilted artworks. Each piece begins with your story which is then translated through color, fabric, and pattern.

About

Tamiko Design Quilts

I came to quilting through design, art, and storytelling.

After visiting the Houston Quilt Show in 2018, I was struck by how much quilting could be. The work on display went far beyond the traditional quilts I knew — it was bold, personal, graphic, expressive, and deeply artistic. I left inspired to begin making my own.

During Covid, I made my first lap quilt, then queen-sized quilts for my two boys and one for my own bed. What began as a way to learn the craft slowly became another form of visual communication: a way to combine memory, place, color, composition, and care.

A Readers’ Challenge from Quilting Arts Magazine inspired my first memory quilt, Thread Journey, which traced my family's immigration timeline across three generations. I was honored when the piece was selected and included in the Winter 2022 issue of the magazine.

Tamiko Design Quilts is an extension of my design practice. Through TamikoDesign, I have spent years creating thoughtful graphic communication for print, interactive, and branding projects. With quilts, I bring that same attention to concept, composition, and detail into a more tactile form — creating textile pieces that are personal and meaningful.

How it works

The commission process

1

Share your story

Send a short note about the person, place, memory, or idea you would like the quilt to hold. You do not need to have everything figured out before getting in touch.

2

Choose a direction

We will discuss the offering, size, colors, timeline, and any meaningful details you would like included. For larger custom pieces, I will provide a simple written quote and design direction before work begins.

3

The piece is made

Once the direction is approved and the deposit is paid, I begin creating the quilted artwork. Progress will be shared during the process. Depending on the project scope, this process will take at least 4 weeks to complete.

4

Finished and ready to hang

Your piece is finished with a hanging sleeve and label on the back. Shipping or local pickup can be arranged.
